Through hands-on learning, students will work together on all aspects of creating a short film. This class utilizes the medium of filmmaking to foster creativity, self-esteem, and the camaraderie of teamwork.

In this class series we’ll explore the Drama genre. Examples of Dramas in cinema include Titanic, Forrest Gump, Lawrence of Arabia and Little Miss Sunshine. Highlights of this course include:

  • Green Screen magic!

  • Acting Games

  • Creating the concept for the movie

  • Location scouting

  • Set design

  • Prop design

  • Creating Wardrobe

  • Lights, camera, action!

  • That should go there! (Editing input)

  • Wrap it up! The movie is complete!

  • Screening for family and friends

Upperclassmen (grades 3-5) can request to be the director, cinematographer, sound person or editor if they are interested in these positions. Responsibilities for each role are included below.

  • Director: Instructs actors, blocks scenes, works closely with the Cinematographer on creative decisions.

  • Cinematographer: Sets up and operates the camera, finds the right shot for each scene, makes sure there are enough takes for the editor to choose from, works closely with the Director.

  • Sound Person: Uses sound equipment to ensure the audio sounds good for every take, operates mixer and microphone.

  • Editor: Cuts together footage, learns video editing software, works closely with Devan.

Additional information:

The class will be 90 minutes long. Pick up is at 4:45.

This filmmaking class is open to all Sycamore students (Pre-K-5). We will be admitting up to 15 students with a minimum of 6 students to run the class. The class will be held on-campus 3:15-4:45 on Tuesdays from November 14th to January 22nd. We will not have school on November 26th or during the Winter Break (December 24th and 31st). There will be a total of 8 sessions.

In order for your child to participate, the child’s parent/guardian is required to sign a photo release form which specifies that School of Film can use content (e.g. photo, video) featuring your child. This content will be used solely for business purposes. This release both makes it possible to show what our program entails and for School of Film to share what students create as a reference for interested families. A form will be sent to your email after registration.
